Honda Motor Co. said Monday it will release the S660 two-seater on Thursday, the company's first convertible sports minicar in 19 years.
Honda's previous such model was the Beat sold from 1991 to 1996
Honda hopes to stimulate demand from young people, many of them said to be less interested in driving vehicles than older people, and from drivers whose children have "graduated" from child care.
The S660 is equipped with a 660cc rear turbocharged engine. A turbocharger sound heard when the pressure on the accelerator is reduced gives the driver a sense of fun in driving, Honda officials said.
The canvas top can be folded back and removed by hand.
